Music in Our Schools

At Distinctive Schools, we believe true education extends beyond traditional boundaries, encouraging students to explore their passions. Our music classrooms are excellent examples of this, where our educators create joyful, enriching experiences that open new worlds of possibility!
Mr. Glover's classroomAt CICS Lloyd Bond, Mr. Glover’s classroom buzzes with excitement as students dive deep into the world of Hip Hop. His students explore five elements of hip hop: MCing, DJing, knowledge, graffiti, and breakdancing. Students explore songwriting by expressing their feelings in journals, which then become the foundation for original songs. They learn about the art of graffiti, exploring both its positive and negative aspects, and experiment with various mediums like markers, crayons, and when the weather permits, non aerosol sprays. DJing teaches them the fundamentals of blending tracks using programs like DJ Pro and mini turntables. Even breakdancing is a collaborative effort, with Mr. Glover joining in the fun in learning basic breakdancing moves, creating joy and connection between him and his students. For his youngest students like Kindergarteners, the focus is on emotions, safe spaces, and affirmations, all explored through the power of music.
Teacher Jude's classroom
At CICS West Belden, Teacher Jude approaches their music class as a way to connect, express identity, and build community. Students are energized by opportunities to make beats, write lyrics in ukulele class, create original musicals, and film music videos as ways to reflect and push their creative endeavors even further! By honoring students’ lived experiences, cultures, and musical tastes, their music class is a space where learning is a joyful and personal experience. From the choir club’s record of being the largest after school club to a show-stopping staff performance at the winter concert, CICS West Belden celebrates music as a shared experience that brings the entire community together.
Ms. Nolan's classroom
Ms. Nolan's music lab at CICS Prairie is rooted in connection, inclusion, and student voice. Her collaborative classroom encourages students to explore music that reflects their lives, build confidence through performance, and experience the joy of creating together. Whether rehearsing in small groups or leading full-class performances, students thrive when given choice—picking songs, instruments, and roles that match their interests and strengths. With strong relationships at the core of her teaching, Ms. Nolan also expands access to real, high-quality instruments in collaboration with local partners. From electronic and acoustic drum sets to plastic trombones, her students are learning with professional equipment that makes music feel real and exciting! Outside of class, students-driven groups like Prairie’s first performance choir, a middle school boy band, and a popular group piano club build community and accountability, giving learners the chance to shine while growing as leaders, problem solvers, and performers, making the music lab a space where students are supported, valued, and free to be who they are.
Ms. Pearson's classroom
In Ms. Pearson’s classroom at CICS Bucktown, she integrates AI into her lessons to help students compose lyrics, create beats, and analyze music. Platforms like Soundtrap have become staples in Ms. Pearson’s teaching, allowing students to experiment with composition and digital soundscapes. Whether analyzing tempo through AI or creating their own beats, students engage deeply with music while gaining exposure to technology. Her approach fosters a love for music that is both timeless and innovative.
